The service is aimed at the overseas market, similar to BBC World, DW-TV, France 24 and Russia Today, and broadcast through satellite and cable operators throughout the world.

NHK World TV started broadcast in 1995 as a service for Japanese expatriates in other parts of the world. NHK's news and information channel broadcasts internationally via satellite and cable TV. Programming is broadcast in English. Began as a news channel in February 2009 using the traditional NHK World logo in their own Digital On Screen Graphic. The old system is not compatible with the new digital standards. Japanese terrestrial broadcasting of HD via ISDB-T started on December 1, 2003 in the Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya metropolitan areas. It has been reported that 27 million HD receivers had been sold in Japan as of October 2007.[4] The Japanese government is studying the implementation of some improvements on the standard as suggested by Brazilian researchers (SBTVD). These new features are unlikely to be adopted in Japan due to incompatibility problems, but are being considered for use in future implementations in other countries, including Brazil itself.[5] Analog terrestrial television broadcasts in Japan are scheduled to end on July 24, 2011, as per the current Japanese broadcasting law.[6] However, the move to DTV by consumers is relatively slow, partly because ISDB receivers are very expensive. Additionally there have been issues with the B-CAS system and very strict Digital Rights Management in respect to the home recording of broadcasts. [edit] Satellite television The medium-scale Broadcasting Satellite for Experimental Purposes (BSE) was planned by Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MOPT) and developed by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) since 1974. After that, the first Japanese experimental broadcasting satellite, called BSE or Yuri, was launched in 1978. NHK started experimental broadcasting of TV program using BS-2a satellite on May, 1984. The satellite BS-2a was launched in preparation for the start of full scale 2-channel broadcasts. Broadcasting Satellite BS-2a was the first national DBS (direct broadcasting satellite), transmitting signals directly into the home of TV viewers. Attitude control of the satellite was conducted using the 3 axial method (zero momentum), and design life was 5 years. The TV transponder units are designed to sufficiently amplify transmitted signals to enable reception by small, 40 or 60 cm home-use parabolic antennas. The satellite was equipped with 3 TV transponders (including reserve units). However, one transponder malfunctioned 2 months after launch (March 23, 1984) and a second transponder malfunctioned 3 months after launch (May 3, 1984). So, the scheduled satellite broadcasting had to be hastily adjusted to test broadcasting on a single channel. Later, NHK started regular service (NTSC) and experimental HDTV broadcasting using BS-2b on June, 1989. Some Japanese producers of home electronic consumer devices began to deliver TV sets, VCRs and even home acoustic systems equipped by built-in satellite tuners or receivers. Such electronic goods had a specific BS logo. On April, 1991, Japanese company JSB started pay TV service while BS-3 communication satellite was in use. In 1996 total number of households that receive satellite broadcasting exceeded 10 million. The modern two satellite systems in use in Japan are BSAT and JCSAT; the modern WOWOW Broadcasting Satellite digital service uses BSAT satellites, while other system of digital TV broadcasting SKY PerfecTV! uses JCSAT satellites. Early morning hours are dominated by news programs, and these run to around 9:00 to 9:30 AM. They are then replaced by late morning shows that target wives who have finished their housework. These run to around 1:30PM, at which time reruns of dramas and information programs that target the same age group start. At around 4:00PM, the young kid-oriented anime and TV shows start, and end around 6:00PM. News programs takeover for an hour ending in 7:00PM, when the "Golden Hour" of TV shows start. 7:00PM to 9:00PM are the time periods into which TV stations pour the most resources. Appearing in this time frame is a certain sign that an actor or actress is a TV star. After 9:00 they switch over to Japanese television dramas and programs focusing on older age groups, which run till 10:00 or 11:00PM. Some stations run news programs from 10:00PM, and around midnight sports news programs run which target working ages. After these, programs for mature audiences run as well as anime that do not expect enough viewers if they were run earlier. The Japanese have sometimes subdivided television series and dramas into kūru (クール?), from the French term "cours" for "course", which is a 3-month period usually of 13 episodes. Each kūru generally has its own opening and ending image sequence and song, recordings of which are often sold. All major TV networks in Japan produce a variety of drama series including romance, comedies, detective stories, horror, and many others. With a theme, there may be a one-episode drama, or 2-nights, that may be aired on special occasions, such as in 2007 where they had a drama produced as a sixty-year anniversary from the end of the World War II, with a theme of the atomic bomb. But it seems the best way at the moment to get my message to you. Things here in Sendai have been rather surreal. But I am very blessed to have wonderful friends who are helping me a lot. Since my shack is even more worthy of that name, I am now staying at a friend's home. We share supplies like water, food and a kerosene heater. We sleep lined up in one room, eat by candlelight, share stories. It is warm, friendly, and beautiful. During the day we help each other clean up the mess in our homes. People sit in their cars, looking at news on their navigation screens, or line up to get drinking water when a source is open. If someone has water running in their home, they put out sign so people can come to fill up their jugs and buckets. Utterly amazingly where I am there has been no looting, no pushing in lines. People leave their front door open, as it is safer when an earthquake strikes. People keep saying, "Oh, this is how it used to be in the old days when everyone helped one another." Quakes keep coming. Last night they struck about every 15 minutes. Sirens are constant and helicopters pass overhead often. We got water for a few hours in our homes last night, and now it is for half a day. Electricity came on this afternoon. Gas has not yet come on. But all of this is by area. Some people have these things, others do not. No one has washed for several days. We feel grubby, but there are so much more important concerns than that for us now. I love this peeling away of non-essentials. Living fully on the level of instinct, of intuition, of caring, of what is needed for survival, not just of me, but of the entire group. There are strange parallel universes happening. Houses a mess in some places, yet then a house with futons or laundry out drying in the sun. People lining up for water and food, and yet a few people out walking their dogs. All happening at the same time. Other unexpected touches of beauty are first, the silence at night. No cars. No one out on the streets. And the heavens at night are scattered with stars. I usually can see about two, but now the whole sky is filled. The mountains are Sendai are solid and with the crisp air we can see them silhouetted against the sky magnificently. And the Japanese themselves are so wonderful. I come back to my shack to check on it each day, now to send this e-mail since the electricity is on, and I find food and water left in my entranceway. I have no idea from whom, but it is there. Old men in green hats go from door to door checking to see if everyone is OK. People talk to complete strangers asking if they need help. I see no signs of fear. Resignation, yes, but fear or panic, no. They tell us we can expect aftershocks, and even other major quakes, for another month or more. And we are getting constant tremors, rolls, shaking, rumbling. I am blessed in that I live in a part of Sendai that is a bit elevated, a bit more solid than other parts. So, so far this area is better off than others. Last night my friend's husband came in from the country, bringing food and water. Blessed again. Somehow at this time I realize from direct experience that there is indeed an enormous Cosmic evolutionary step that is occurring all over the world right at this moment. The call was concerning the nuclear issue in Japan. The chief spokesman was Sir. John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government, and he was joined by a number of qualified nuclear experts based in the UK. Their assessment of the current situation in Japan is as follows: * In case of a 'reasonable worst case scenario' ... See More(defined as total meltdown of one reactor with subsequent radioactive explosion) an exclusion zone of 30 miles (50km) would be the maximum required to avoid affecting peoples' health. Even in a worse situation (loss of two or more reactors) it is unlikely that the damage would be significantly more than that caused by the loss of a single reactor. * The current 20km exclusion zone is appropriate for the levels of radiation/risk currently experienced, and if the pouring of sea water can be maintained to cool the reactors, the likelihood of a major incident should be avoided. A further large quake with tsunami could lead to the suspension of the current cooling operations, leading to the above scenario. * The bottom line is that these experts do not see there being a possibility of a health problem for residents in Tokyo. The radiation levels would need to be hundreds of times higher than current to cause the possibility for health issues, and that, in their opinion, is not going to happen (they were talking minimum levels affecting pregnant women and children - for normal adults the levels would need to be much higher still). * The experts do not consider the wind direction to be material. They say Tokyo is too far away to be materially affected. * If the pouring of water can be maintained the situation should be much improved after ten days, as the reactors' cores cool down. * Information being provided by Japanese authorities is being independently monitored by a number of organizations and is deemed to be accurate, as far as measures of radioactivity levels are concerned. * This is a very different situation from Chernobyl, where the reactor went into meltdown and the encasement, which exploded, was left to burn for weeks without any control. Even with Chernobyl, an exclusion zone of 30 miles would have been adequate to protect human health. The problem was that most people became sick from eating contaminated food, crops, milk and water in the region for years afterward, as no attempt was made to measure radioactivity levels in the food supply at that time or warn people of the dangers. The secrecy over the Chernobyl explosion is in contrast to the very public coverage of the Fukushima crisis. * The Head of the British School asked if the school should remain closed. The answer was there is no need to close the school due to fears of radiation. There may well be other reasons - structural damage or possible new quakes - but the radiation fear is not supported by scientific measures, even for children. * Regarding Iodine supplementation, the experts said this was only necessary for those who had inhaled quantities of radiation (those in the exclusion zone or workers on the site) or through consumption of contaminated food/water supplies. Long term consumption of iodine is, in any case, not healthy. The discussion was surprisingly frank and to the point. The conclusion of the experts is that the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami, as well as the subsequent aftershocks, was much more of an issue than the fear of radiation sickness from the nuclear plants. NHK-Fernsehen [Bearbeiten] Der Sender produziert zwei landesweite terrestrische Fernsehvollprogramme (NHK General TV auf Kanal 1 (Tokio), das Bildungsprogramm NHK Educational TV auf Kanal 3 (Tokio)). Das Hauptprogramm von NHK wird zu bestimmten Sendezeiten durch regionale Nachrichten und Reportagen ergänzt, eingespeist von NHK-Studios in den Regionen oder Präfekturen. NHK strahlt über den BS-Satelliten drei weitere Vollprogramme aus, NHK BS1, NHK BS2 und NHK BShi. Während BS2 sich auf ausgefallenere Spielfilme und Dokumentationen spezialisiert (vergleichbar mit ARTE), zeigt BS1 vor allem politische Hintergrund- und Nachrichtensendungen. Eine eigene Nachrichtensendung kommt im Prinzip jede Stunde. Daneben gibt es die „Zeit für die Nachrichten aus dem Ausland“ zusammengesetzt aus Nachrichtenprogrammen von BBC, ZDF, RTR, France 2, TVE, Al-Dschasira, KBS, CCTV, ABC(USA) und CNN, welche jeweils zweisprachig ausgestrahlt werden. NHK BShi stellt eine Sonderform dar, da bei diesem Sender nur Inhalte, die in HDTV mit einer Auflösung von 1920x1080i vorliegen, ausgestrahlt werden. Während die Satellitenprogramme NHK BS1, BS2 und BShi oft in Kabelnetze eingespeist werden, sind NHK General TV und NHK Educational TV ausschließlich terrestrisch und über Kabelfernsehen zu empfangen. Dabei ist anzumerken, dass die Einspeisung des digitalen Satellitenfernsehens ins Kabelnetz oftmals unter Verringerung der Datenrate geschieht. Auslandsfernsehen [Bearbeiten] Logo des Auslandsdienstes NHK World NHK World TV ist der weltweit über die PanAmSat 8,9,10 Satelliten kostenlos empfangbare Auslandssender von NHK. Auf diesem Sender werden hauptsächlich Nachrichten und Dokumentationen ausgestrahlt. Zusätzlich bietet NHK auf den oben genannten Satelliten auch noch den Bezahlfernsehsender NHK World Premium, der außerhalb von Europa und den USA weltweit abonniert werden kann. In Europa kann der Nachrichtensender NHK World TV seit Ende September 2008 über den Satellit Astra 1M unverschlüsselt empfangen werden. Darüber hinaus existiert für den Markt in Europa der Sender JSTV und für den Markt in den USA TV Japan. Hierbei besteht das Programm aus den Programmen der beiden NHK und Privatsendern wie Fuji TV. Radio Japan (NHK World) [Bearbeiten] Der internationale Dienst von NHK bietet in seinem General Service ein informatives Programm in japanischer und englischer Sprache an. Weitere Fremdsprachenprogramme, in fast 20 verschiedenen Sprachen, richten sich hauptsächlich an Hörer in Asien und Europa. Radio Japan sendete von 1937 bis 2007 auch in deutscher Sprache. Zuletzt wurden zweimal täglich je 30 Minuten Programm auf Deutsch gesendet. Die Angebote auf Deutsch sowie Schwedisch, Italienisch und Malaiisch wurden am 30. September 2007 beendet. Benutzt werden derzeit Kurzwellensendeanlagen in Yamata, Koga sowie Sendeanlagen von Radio Africa No. 1 in Gabun, in Kanada, in Französisch-Guayana, sowie Sendeanlagen von Merlin-Communications, dem Betreiber der BBC-Sendeanlagen, in Großbritannien, Singapur und den Ascension-Inseln. Seit 2008 sendet man auch über die Sendeanlange Wertachtal (Deutschland, 13:00-13:30 Uhr MEZ).
